Are tablets the future of work? Or are we holding them back?

Over the past month, I’ve swapped my laptop for a tablet and keyboard combo for nearly all my work—minus programming. The biggest takeaway? We are incredibly close to a major shift in how professionals work.

Thanks to cloud-based software, powerful mobile chips, and desktop-grade accessories, a lightweight tablet with 6GB+ RAM (or an M-series iPad) handles the daily grind with ease:

  • Communication: Email, Slack, and smooth video calls.
  • Operations: Heavy docs, spreadsheets, and cloud storage management.
  • Creative: Project management, UI design, and light content creation.

So why hasn’t the tablet completely taken over corporate offices yet?

The Friction Points

The hardware is ready, but a few things are still slowing down widespread adoption:

  • The Entertainment Stigma: Many Android tablets are still marketed as Netflix machines, not productivity tools.
  • Ecosystem Gaps: App ecosystems—especially on Android—aren’t always desktop-grade.
  • Workflow Clunkiness: Multitasking, file management, and external peripheral support still have room to grow.
  • Legacy Habits: Companies stick to “what’s always worked” because IT deployment for laptops is familiar territory.

How Apple is Leading the Charge

While Android finds its footing in productivity, Apple is aggressively closing the gap:

The Hardware Leap: M-series chips deliver literal desktop performance, and the Magic Keyboard gives the iPad a true laptop form factor. The Software Evolution: iPadOS continues to mature with Stage Manager, proper windowing, and robust external display support.

Apple’s marketing slogan is proving true: “Your next computer isn’t a computer.”

The hardware is sitting on our desks. The software is catching up fast. Now, the real hurdle is rewriting our old habits and rethinking our daily workflows.

What would it take for you (or your team) to completely ditch the laptop?
